<description><![CDATA[For Friday lunch, I walk up and down the Lower Marsh market near Waterloo in search of a suitable outdoor dining experience. The aptly named vegetarian falafel stall catches my eye and it is to here I return. It&rsquo;s the stall closest to the Old Vic and having never eaten here before my decision is reinforced by the people awaiting service from the two friendly gentlemen at the stall. I can only assume that some of these people are return custom from locals who work in the area.<br />
<br />
On the menu is a falafel wrap. Simple, to the point, limited options. A medium or large size is on offer, the medium at &pound;3, the large &pound;4. My friend is losing patience with the queue and contemplates jumping into Greggs. Thankfully, common sense prevails and our friendship remains intact. The wrap is prepared, first spreading hummus over it. This is followed by a chilli paste and then a host of pickled vegetables and salad including tomatoes and roasted aubergine. Finally, the falafel is added to the mix before some yoghurt is drizzled on top and the package is wrapped. <br />
<br />
We head across to the near empty park to enjoy. The falafel is excellent. It has a green hue to it and the chick peas are tasty and well spiced. The falafel ratio to vegetable/pickles/hummus and chilli is well proportioned. At &pound;3 it is difficult to beat in terms of value. I have happy memories of falafel. My most enduring memory is enjoying it at a falafel stall by the East Gate just outside the entrance to the Old City in Jerusalem. It cost a dollar for a similar type wrap. Each time I have good falafel ever since, I think of that falafel stall outside the Old City. It is the best to be found in the Middle East, despite facing hefty competition from Syria and Lebanon. I to this day have conversations with friends with whom I was on that trip with. We returned each day to hand over our dollar for another wrap. Should you happen to end up in Jerusalem, do swing by. It&rsquo;s been the bones of 7 years since I was there, but I imagine it still remains. I can&rsquo;t think of anything that could have happened in the interim period in Jerusalem. It&rsquo;s a quiet enough spot.<br />
<br />
With happy recollections, it&rsquo;s back to some form of attempted intellectual endeavour, heading indoors to warm up my freezing fingers.<br />

Nevertheless suits and all and fighting jet lag they did a sterling job serving to their eagerly awaiting staff.<br />

<description><![CDATA[From Maltby Street, it&rsquo;s a hop, skip and a cycle over Tower Bridge and north eastbound towards Netil Market. Having commenced with dessert at St. John&rsquo;s for breakfast, unless you have tunnel vision, it&rsquo;s next to near impossible not to get distracted by the delights of Broadway Market. Continuing on the dessert theme, I happen upon Fiendish &amp; Goode, dealers of delectable dainties, as they describe themselves. The lemon drizzle with green crushed pistachios, and parsnip pecan ginger with mascarpone cream cakes match their description. <br />
<br />
My intention was indeed to traverse around the wonders of Broadway market and make my way to Netil market, but it was ne&rsquo;er impossible not to get waylaid once again by the good people at yum bun who sell slow roasted belly pork with cucumbers, spring onions and hoi sin in steamed buns. The good lady selling the pork steams her own pillow soft buns &ndash; with difficulty apparently, according to her partner on the stall &ndash; and a fine job she does too. It must be a labour of love. Combined with the succulent free range blythburgh pork it all melts on the tongue. They are delicious. <br />
<br />
<br />
They are about to commence an enterprise at London&#39;s only outdoor food night market from Friday the 25th of November until Christmas at the Long Table on Abbot Street in Dalston. Given the company they find themelves in at this market, including two of my favourites -Hawksmoor and Moro, it seems like an exciting venture. <br />
<br />
Eventually, my nose leads me to my destination at Netil Market which is located at the top of Broadway Market as you approach London Fields and take a right. The market sells vintage clothing, bits and bobs, has a few food stalls, and even has a place to fix your bike. There is a queue at the Lucky Chip burger van and I&rsquo;m told there will be a 20 minute wait. The smells emanating from Lucky Chip intimates that it will be worth the wait so I order a burger with bacon (no cheese for me) which comes with pickles and lettuce and seek a seat to wait.<br />
<br />
Space is at at a premium in the market. Given the scarcity of seats, my cunning plan is to sit on my new folding bike which I am still getting used to and which is static and in its parked position. Instead of sitting on it however, I manage to end up flat on my arse as I fall off the bike in slow motion. Now, elsewhere when something like this happens, you end up receiving a round of applause and collective guffaws. At Netil Market, full of the too cool for school East London brigade, hardly anyone bats an eyelid. So when a right auld eijit ends up on her backside laughing at her own idiocy, no one pays an iota of attention.<br />
<br />
The burger, when it arrives, brings happiness to one&rsquo;s life. It smells and looks great. It&rsquo;s served in a brioche bun, which is incredibly light, the pattie is juicy and reminds me of the great burgers you can get in New York. Sometimes a burger is perfect, other times, it&rsquo;s even better. This is one of those occasions. At &pound;6.50 the burger is worth the bruised backside and the even bigger bruised ego.<br />

<description><![CDATA[The concept is simple. Get together the best food traders in London, put them into a disused space, add a few long tables, some candles, drink, and a bit of music and the masses will come. And indeed for the launch they came in their droves. Fortunately I had the good sense to get there for 6pm. People were already waiting to sample the delights on offer. The place filled quickly as people sought an eclectic eating experience in a convivial atmosphere.<br />
<br />
When you look at the traders present, the quality is apparent. Moro from Exmouth Market brought their lamb to the table. I didn&rsquo;t have it at the long table, but anytime I have it on Exmouth Market I love it. Yum Buns were there with their sublime pork belly. Everywhere I turned, everyone seemed to have a bun. Happiness is pork belly in a bun. Burger aficionadas were spoilt for choice and possibly need therapy having had to decide between the burgers from Hawskmoor or Lucky Chip. What a choice!<br />
<br />
I opted for the pork and beef meatball in a spicy sauce from the boys at the Bowler. The boys do great meatballs. Already well established at the recently created Brockley Market (more to come on that in future blogs), they bring their exceptional culinary talents to the table. I have mine with a little coriander which complements the meaty and spicy flavours. The meatball cost &pound;2, essentially a taster.<br />
<br />
I then have half of a chicken hot chicken ciabatta with salad and a chilli dressing. The reason I only had half, was because my friend has recently quit being a pescatarian and decided to give chicken a chance. It was an emotional moment. The chicken was roasted on a spit with potatoes roasted in the chicken juices. The ciabatta was tasty and the chicken of good quality, and very good value at &pound;4.50.<br />
<br />
The outdoor food revolution continues unabated in London. The best thing about the market is that the traders love their food and the quality is apparent at a decent cost. Everyone in London should make their way to Dalston on a Friday evening until December 16th and support these micro-enterprises.&nbsp;Everyone wins.<br />
<br />
The queue upon leaving was mental, working its way back to Kingsland road. Some people in the queue didn&rsquo;t even know what was going on, but they figured it must be cool if so many people were queuing to get in. Sometimes it must be tiresome to try too hard to be cool. Forget about the queue, get there early and enjoy the evening. It is that good.<br />

<description><![CDATA[&lsquo;I guess we could just go to Maccy D&rsquo;s instead?&rsquo; is the first comment I hear as I approach the queue snaking its way round the hoardings of the redevelopment site near Dalston Junction, right past fast food&rsquo;s biggest hitter. Not because the girl in question has assessed the wares on offer at the new night food market round the corner and found them wanting, but because the length of the line ahead of her is, frankly, ridiculous. <br />
<br />
I&rsquo;d had an email about The Long Table a couple of weeks earlier, and immediately thought it sounded like my kind of thing &ndash; good food, people getting together for a few drinks, something a bit different. There had been a tiny snippet about it in the Evening Standard the night before, but I think if I&rsquo;d mentioned it to most of my friends I&rsquo;d have received a fair few blank stares. So the scene I encounter at 7.30pm on Friday night is quite a surprise. A girl counting back from the front to where her friend is standing: &lsquo;98&hellip; 99&hellip; wait till we get round the corner, there&rsquo;s loads of people there.&rsquo; Someone on their mobile: &lsquo;Yeah, don&rsquo;t worry, you&rsquo;ve got plenty of time to get here, I think it&rsquo;s one out, one in.&rsquo; <br />

There are club promoters and rival street-market entrepreneurs handing out flyers, and a man with a huge pizza on a mercy mission to boost the spirits of all those who haven&rsquo;t made it to his stall inside yet. There is a TV chef scanning the crowd for the PR person, anxious to gain entry. It is a bit of an event. <br />
<br />
Up at the front, manning a ramshackle metal gate, two burly bouncers struggle to keep charge &ndash; clearly they are just as overwhelmed as I am by the hungry, enthusiastic hordes, all eager to chow down in a tiny backstreet car park on a chilly November night. <br />
<br />
Perhaps it&rsquo;s the Nuno Mendes effect. The chef&rsquo;s supperclub-come-sphere-of-experimental cuisine, The Loft Project, as well as Viajante and the more recent Corner Room at Bethnal Green Town Hall, have had food obsessives frothing at the mouth over the past year or two, and by all accounts he is the brains behind tonight&rsquo;s shenanigans.<br />
<br />
And then we get inside. And it becomes clear that Nuno knew what he was doing when he decided to hitch his cart to the street food revolution. It&rsquo;s rammed. And everyone has a smile on their face. When they&rsquo;re not busy stuffing food in it, that is. Because the selection is way more than tempting. <br />
<br />
There&rsquo;s Homeslice, the Kiwi pizza purveyors who have been feeding the five thousand outside; Yum Bun with their sticky steamed porky loveliness; the big, bad Big Apple Hot Dog cart; and Takoyaki octopus balls. The &lsquo;proper&rsquo; restaurants are getting in on the act too: the folk from Moro are handing out bowls of steaming chestnut &amp; chorizo soup and Hawksmoor is offering a bourbon &amp; burger combo, as well as Manhattans served in jam jars. And, thanks to the resurgence of London&rsquo;s beer brewing trade, there is plenty of local ale, from Greenwich-based Meantime and newcomers London Fields Brewery, who are pulling pints of Love Not War &ndash; a beer made as the sounds of the summer&rsquo;s riots raged outside their Hackney headquarters.<br />

After a leisurely, drool-inducing circuit of the small courtyard, occasionally stumbling on the uneven ground, my friend and I join the crowd in front of the burger boys at Lucky Chip. Half the fun is watching the guys in action &ndash; the precision squirting of ketchup on the lined-up buns, the speedy, deft, sizzle-flip-sizzle of the beef patties on the hot plate, the metal cloche and the squirt of water from a squeezy bottle to steam the buns to shiny perfection. And, oh my, this baby is worth the wait: soft, meaty, juicy, with cheese melting down your chin and pickles packing just the right amount of punch. We&rsquo;ve hit the jackpot.<br />
<br />
All around, there are people having just as good a time as we are. The long table in question is actually lots of sturdy wooden ones, arranged in a U-shape under a spiky white tent roof, dotted with candles in bottles and lined with people chatting, drinking, eating and generally enjoying each others&rsquo; company. <br />
<br />
Posh restaurants have their place, and I&rsquo;m certainly not swearing off fancy food in a nice warm room, but this is a lot more fun. So what is it that has brought the crowds out in the cold? There&rsquo;s an air of the exotic &ndash; the atmosphere reminds me of a square I visited in Palermo, Sicily, on holiday this July. It was a bit less parky there of course, but with the same relaxed conviviality: rock up, grab a bite and a bottle, sit and enjoy the vibe. There&rsquo;s a fire in a bin, New York-hobo style, and hot chocolate spiked with absinthe is firing up many a belly. <br />
<br />
I chat to a man in a smart black hat who is dishing out meatballs, just like mama used to make, from his stall, The Bowler. &lsquo;Why are there so many people here?&rsquo; I ask him. &lsquo;Well I think we&rsquo;re hitting a bit of a zeitgeist,&rsquo; he tells me. &lsquo;People sneer about trends from the States, but the street food vans over there have been getting more and more popular, and we&rsquo;re about a year behind. Sometimes after a heavy night I find myself in Burger King, scoffing a burger and chips, but for the same amount of money you can get something here that&rsquo;s been made from really decent ingredients, with care, and it tastes great.&rsquo; <br />
<br />
Having seen the army of rumbling tummies outside, I&rsquo;m concerned that he&rsquo;ll run out of balls long before they&rsquo;ve all been filled, and I ask him if he thinks he&rsquo;s brought enough. &lsquo;I&rsquo;ve got 320 meatballs.&rsquo; he tells me. &lsquo;I&rsquo;ve been making them all day.&rsquo; And that, food fans, is why a visit to the golden arches will never come anywhere near to cutting the mustard. It&rsquo;s about passion, flavour and a big warm welcome. Get down to Dalston any Friday before Christmas and see for yourself. Just make sure you arrive early. <br />

Three eat.st traders a night for six nights on the trot - that&#39;s a lot of us to sample...<br />

Headlining will be Elbow, Sinead O&#39;Connor, Chris Martin, Marina &amp; the Diamonds and Example - and it&#39;s almost a sell-out.<br />

<description><![CDATA[They say everyman needs protection they say everyman must fall&hellip; and after the honey moon of an early summer passed the express rides with the Heptones to the Huganought valleys around Stroud for a hill top wedding with a wild wind that blew all the clouds away and were old trees told old tales with the bending of the branches and the rustle of the leaves. Fueled by cava and cones hearts opened for all to see in a family affair of a family bound not by blood but a common cause. And then we are blown back east to London to redesign the muri cart and take it off to the book launch of Richard Johnson&rsquo;s &rdquo; Street Food Revolution&rdquo; in beautiful garden hidden behind Victoria and the next day its back to the Rye for another night at the eat street hawkers fortnight organised by Petra the co-founder of the street food collective eat st and Yianni of the meatwagon fame- two great doers and god bless the doers.<br />

Much has been written about Yianni and his grilling- and why not- he makes thing happen. After his stainless trailer was half inched from a Peckham garage on a snow bound December night he set up the Meateasy for the ugly months of winter above a dive bar in New Cross. Walking into it was like entering a highly charged bolt hole from sanity were you could do nothing but let the dog loose. It was like Ronald MacDonald got lost in the swamp on a day out and appeared a year later holding an unnerving grin- unshaved, perspiring and with glazed wild eyes that spoke many things not encouraged in suburbia. The delicious mayhem of all that grilling and shaking got him back on the road with an old US ambulance( meatwagon) and a regular pitch at the Rye and an appearance in Ok magazine. Who said punks dead. And as luck will have it last night i went to the preview of his new venture Meatliquor- all dark,red and decadent, underneath a car park and just round the corner from the Wigmore Hall.A place to pollute the precious with pleasure.<br />

There was a night down Vyner Street too for the first thursday art bash with all the vintage, haircuts, some arty goings on and a lot of continental just hanging out on the street. Steady business when the larger kicks in and after sleep park side and early swim in the London fields in the perfect blue of a Friday followed by a walk with the new trolly hawking around the Bangla (Bengali) areas of East London. Brick lane then Shadwell and the meat, fish and veg bazaars of Chapman Street that peddle Bengali fare in arches under the dockland light railway. Authentic and undiluted- cheap and good. Freezers full of fish you never heard of from the waters of Bangladesh and yes its not right on coming all the way around the world but the tastes are right off the plate and out of this world. They know about the fish- it is their great love at lunch. Just ask for help. Show a little interest you repaid a 100 times. Salam-a-lekum&hellip; a-lekum salam- peace be with you. Dhanyabaad- thank you and on we roll to Whitechapel market &ndash; more Bengali foods and household wares and surprised faces at a jhal muri cart with a white man at the helm. They are generous and kind to my version of their beloved snack but hidden in the shadows is the real thing and the only other jhal muri wallah I have seen over here. Also he governs from an argos trolly but no frills- just trolly and tray with the muri, sev, mustard oil, onion and coriander mixed, masala and hot chilli pickle. He mixes in a screw top jar and shake shake shake and into a cup at a pound a pop. Bingo. My set up look vulgar and ostentatious in comparison but thats just how it goes.<br />

Before pitching the van for a river side residence i pop into the pop up Dishoom on the south bank which in the blurb went &rdquo; if an old Bombay Cafe strolled casually down to the beach (while perhaps on a mild acid trip), the result would be the Dishoom Chowpatty Beach Bar&rdquo;- well if I got sold some acid as bland, predictable and one dimentionnal as this I would change my drug dealer.<br />

June was filled with work away from the city and on the way out of town we head to one of London&#39;s Indian enclaves Tooting to get supplies not found on the rural areas and there were strange and wonderful goings on going on that Sunday morning. Coming down the Upper Tooting Road outside the Sikh temple they are stopping traffic to give people bottles of water and samosa&#39;s- no questions asked, nothing asked for. In the giving they receive. At Bhavins were i get my masor dal, tamarind blocks, palm sugar, yellow limes, bombay onions and all i am led into the back by Roy, one of the many brothers that run the show and given dal puri&#39;s fried straight from frozen till they turn crisp and swollen. Commercially made but homestyle taste. A puri is a flat bread and these are cd sized disc that have been filled with a layer of ground dal with mild spice. A street food wonder all over Northern India used to mop up the dals and the subji- a breakfast that make total sense when you need to go all the way. June is in the middle of the mango season and outside high pilled boxes of the swollen sensual fruits perfume the London streets. The different varieties appear as to there season. Alphonse, Keshar and Rajapuri the big juicy variety perfect for lassi&#39;s and also to eat with the fried puri&#39;s- infect it is hard to imagine a combination that takes you further to paradise.Crisp warm spiced bread, sweet voluptuous orange flesh- get the picture. Also from the one gas burner at the back of the store i am given potato mashed till silken and softly spiced, dipped in gram batter and fried and eaten with a little of their green chutney your mind is starting to levitate.<br />

Pooja is is a great sweet shop and chaat centre. There are many mirrors in the shop and many options to the tummy- sweets and snacks, snacks and sweets and on Sundays its alive with the excitements of what is to come. The Indian love of the pleasures of the palate is intoxicating and so grateful we should be to have them bring such colour and charm to the grey suburban landscapes. I get the dry stuff there for the muri- sev, channa and mung dal and always something from the chaat counter. This time dahi varda- a lentil dumpling (the varda) soaked in thin yoghurt( the dahi) with tamarind, green chutney, red chutney, onion , crunchy bits, masala&rsquo;s and more crunchy bits and all for &pound;2.00- giving it away. Go check out the chaat- best value, best taste.<br />

There was a couple of days cooking in a holy place in Oxfordshire- a place with a kitchen and a garden that provides and then way out west for the great honour to cook for one of the great voices- Salif Keita of Mali. A rear soul with a voice as ancient as the past and as pure as the first gaze of a new born. It be true to say that he appeared less impressed with the jhal muri than I with his music but his eyes came alive with the tuna cooked with ginger, coconut, cinnamon, mustard seeds and coriander leaf, served with spicy tomato sauce and rice. Rice and fish- everyone gets the rice and fish<br />
<br />
AND on we fly-up the M5- back to the hills by Stroud for the summers heftily reported wedding with the promise of some fat cash and A list action. 5 miles out as the rain starts you&rsquo;re lost in the woods and loosing it to the greens and the clutch is slipping and smelling and the gears ain&rsquo;t gearing and another wrong turn and you&rsquo;re starting to wonder but out of nowhere just when you least expect it there were some balloons and a small white sign and you say thank you to the unicorns. By 5 you all set and spinning out cones just in front of the dj set up with the stage just there and for the next hours you bathed in some of the best music you could wish to hear.Easing in with the love songs and into the jump and swing, calypso and skank from old school london dj&rsquo;s from the blues of west London and the basements of Soho and then the band- my god the band. Warren Storm with &lsquo;Lil Band of Gold- down home swamp music from Louisiana, the real deal with the music running through every cell of their collective body. Tight as tight as tight with a steady simmer starting and up they go and we have no choice but to follow. There was a break were micky fins and a prawn gumbo, made by the horn section, were shared and then for a second set that went into orbit and half way through its more than religious and the muri station is left to fend for itself and the boundary between upright professional and rum infused reveller has been well and truly broken. As the birds started to sing you side wind back to the van singing too, Reeling in the pleasure and the power of four fat beats to the bar delivered by people who mean every moment of it.<br />

Were I the guilty type that ugly emotion could have raised its head for charging good money to have such fun but instead I drove in the slow lane all the way back to the holy place in Oxfordshire to provide fuel for people looking to find a deeper peace within with out resorting to rum fuelled rock and roll. While i cooked a vivid green soup with all the garden had to offer my laptop got stollen and an expensive metal box and years of unbacked up creations got smoked in a crack pipe in a Didcot bedsit. It felt wrong then, it feels wrong now. Some what stunned you head to the capital to get set for Glastonbury via the garage and get booted for your second three figure bill in three weeks and when the day before you meant to be leaving for the festival my beautiful van is back in the garage and I ain&rsquo;t seeing the sunny side and the Be Good Tanyas hit it on the head - some times I don&rsquo;t know were this dirty road is leading me, sometimes I don&rsquo;t know the reason why but I guess I keep gambling lots of moves and lots of rambling cos its easier than waiting around to die. At the wholesale market in Southall were you shopping large for an event you not sure you get too, you see, in the office of the supplier of the Indian onions, a garland and a poster of a man in a turban with a message to the power of unity and oneness. At my veg suppliers in Covent Garden they have a calendar of a girl with vacant eyes, spread legs and a shaven snatch that looks like a bruise. Horses for courses.<br />
<br />
A day late but the express rolls out of the garage and into the sun rising out of the western skies. Come Avebury the sun has given way to the rain and it accompanies me all the way to the churned up low-lying sodden strip of earth that is to be my home for the next week in the Babylon market area of the festival- the badlands in everyway. I got the pitch by turning up at the site office in April and opening up the van and serving up the muri. I said I can&rsquo;t pay the rate and don&rsquo;t do the main drag. There were nodding heads and mummers of appreciation. A week later i got a call offering a pitch at minimal rent next to a jazz bar open till three and i was thinking cool little corner that filtered out the masses and the scene of much magic and of the express being carried out on raised shoulders after a heaven sent week with pockets full of crumpled twenties- but instead you on Oxford street not just off the Kingsland Road and its going to be a long week of watching people walk past staring while eating pasties.<br />
<br />
Alcohol inevitably becomes part of the equation and you running on tequila and cider. The local sound system shut down at 3 and the clear up truck rumble outside your tent at 5.30. By 8 you peel yourself of the ground and clear up the shit from in front of your stall, try and recreate some order, control the mud and pray for the sun. On Friday you escape to catch the last song of BB King- all silver haired and angelic, radiating a beauty that could melt a stone. He sang &ldquo;The thrill is gone&rdquo; and you feel it cut straight into your heart because in the drizzle that afternoon I knew just what he meant. For sure there were many lovely people who ventured throughout the cavernous mud pool in front of the stall and it was almost worth it to see Baz&rsquo;s eyes on Sunday while he downed a ghungni box and yes the sun did come out on Sunday and Paul Simon sang Paul Simon sang &ldquo;Slip Sliding Away&rdquo; but by then my spirit had long slip slid away and you leave the next day &pound;200 down- basically paying good money to have people crap out side your front door. Never again you say to yourself and an elephant never forgets- but i never did have a trunk.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[These are exciting times for food-loving urbanites. A popular explosion of new restaurants, food events, markets and innovative dining concepts are pushing the boundaries of culinary culture and transforming urban landscapes. The impact of these changes are such to the extent that scholar and critic Sharon Zukin has described food as &lsquo;the &ldquo;new&rdquo; art in the urban cultural experience&rsquo;. This is an intriguing proposition. It undeniably resonates with the sense of expression, experimentation and passion driving the contemporary enthusiasm for food. As with art, the host of adjectives used to describe current trends&mdash;foodie, gourmet, omnivore, street, exotic, artisan, absurd&mdash;fail to capture what ultimately must be sensed to be understood. Even more than art, the growth of food-based experiences present a (literal) re-orientation of cities toward destination and life-style based forms of consumption. If we accept the merit of the claim that &lsquo;food is the new art&rsquo; a question that follows is whether this is something to be celebrated. <br />
<br />
There are certainly reasons to be sceptical. Food tastes are, of course, cultural constructs. They inherently work as markers of distinction through which forms of elitism are produced and hierarchies maintained. Popular orientations of food as a commodity to be experienced and entertained by&mdash;rather than sustained and nourished&mdash;would seem to only perpetuate inequalities. A legitimate concern is that food can easily be appropriated as another tool of domination leveraging urban space in favour of the more affluent. In a rush to follow the next food fad, difference can be reduced to matters of flavour while demand for premium quality food in some neighbourhoods can crowd out low-cost alternatives. Adorno and Horkheimer&rsquo;s well-known critique of &lsquo;the culture industry perpetually cheat[ing] its consumers of what it perpetually promises&rsquo; is perhaps given a new twist. No longer must &lsquo;the diner must be satisfied with the menu&rsquo;, for in many cities prices are enough to keep some residents from even sitting down at the table.<br />
<br />
There are many reasons, however, to be more optimistic. Just as the mass popularisation of art in cities expanded opportunities for exposure, there seems to be a growing awareness and appreciation of the importance food in urban space. Farmers markets are moving into the city like never before. Food festivals have become a ubiquitous component of urban leisure. Cooking courses, demonstrations and tasting sessions regularly draw crowds. And just as postmodern aesthetic sensibilities challenged rigid distinctions between high and low forms of art, so too has the new enthusiasm for food brought about certain democratisations. One of these is, paradoxically, a more stringent and more embracing standard for what counts as &lsquo;good&rsquo; food. At higher economic-levels, food is increasingly expected to be locally produced, ethically sourced and environmentally sustainable. Independent, local and small-scale ventures are often more adept at meeting these criteria, presenting a challenge to the mass production so often implicated in the darker sides of the food industry. At the lower-end, divergent practices are helping to shift consumer expectations of value from quantity to quality. A diverse range of ethnic foods are celebrated for their authenticity. Mobile vendors and &lsquo;street food&rsquo; are gaining culinary approval that enhance their social benefits while expanding entry-level economic opportunities. Collective actions are highlighting limited access to healthy food as a social injustice. In response, many inhabitants are digging up plots, forming co-ops and growing their own. Supermarkets, restaurants and fast food outlets are having to raise their game to stay competitive at all levels. <br />
<br />
If food is the new art, the prevailing aesthetic seems to be that good food needs to have a good story. If its origins can be narrated, its credentials clarified, its meaning or value articulated, then it can satisfy the emergent criteria. The increasing conversation and evaluation surrounding food points to another feature of these developments: food as an urban experience is generating all sorts of novel ways for people to come together to eat, to socialise, and to collectively share in the pleasures of being together in cities. Given that food is of course much more than art, these developments demand our attention. Certainly they open up new spaces for pleasure and politics, for imagining more satiating and more equitable futures. <br />

<description><![CDATA[Approached by the developers of King&#39;s Cross, Europe&#39;s largest development site, eat.st was asked to set up a street food market showcasing their wares on a pitch right next to the new Central St Martins Art College, on London&#39;s newest street, King&#39;s Boulevard. <br />
<br />
Now trading three days a week, Wednesday to Friday, after a highly successful trial period, the market has proven that street food brings people out to a site few would have known about or even cared to visit. <br />
<br />
Petra Barran, co-founder of eat.st, chatted to me about King&#39;s Boulevard and the start of a partnership destined for great things. <br />

They are planning to install a bespoke pizza oven into the Ape and then use the inspiration from their Italian adventure to bring authentic Neapolitan pizza to the people of London. <br />

<description><![CDATA[The first encounter for me and Bhangra Burger was in Kingston-upon-Thames, April 2010. I thought, who is this cat with the whole Baba Gupta character? I had to approach and sample...What hit me in the face, literally, was a whole heap of spiciness smothered round a huge rough-cut lamb burger and forced, corset-like, into a flatbread. The overspill was immense, my face got messy and a wodge of napkins stepped in as a bib. I devoured that generous package (ooh-err) and was instantly hooked on the slap-dash deliciousness of it all.<br />
<br />
Since then, Alec has built a new stall, moved on to one horsebox, realised it wouldn&#39;t comply with the new LE Zone, sold it and now can be seen cranking the new Bhangra Bus around London and beyond. <br />
<br />
I say, embrace the mess - it&#39;s part of the experience. And to Alec I say, bring in the Bhangra Bib - people(&#39;s food) will be all over it.<br />

You&#39;ll find him at his hand-fashioned cart on Soho&#39;s Rupert St (Brewer St would&#39;ve been better, but it&#39;s close), donning tweeds, a flat cap and plus-fours. Actually, I think he hasn&#39;t quite graduated to plus-fours yet but surely it won&#39;t be long. Brewed Boy makes of his stall an event in itself, which is one of the reasons we love him. Not only does he serve some rocking Sqaure Mile coffee, produce marvellous delectables to accompany - Chelsea buns and chilli-spun Valrhona brownie bites, y&#39;all! - but he also manages a micro book exchange on the counter top.<br />
<br />
This is enough to win eat.st over - it&#39;s coming with that extra bit of imagination and input that delights people and transforms space.<br />
<br />
This guy doesn&#39;t do short cuts and you can taste it in his coffee, hear it in his banter and see it from the queues of punters who love picking up what he&#39;s putting down.<br />

We did, however, get to experience the pickle backs - a shot of rye chased with a shot of briney pickle juice (which we then chased further with a box of cold, chicken fat roast potatoes - amazing).<br />

We look forward to more delights - and the full menu - from Jamie and Tom.<br />

Together with The Meatwagon and Capital pubs we have thrown our net wide across town to bring to Peckham the best that eat.st has. Yianni&rsquo;s team will be running the kitchen of The Rye pub this summer and wanted their fellow eat.streeters to come in and get the party started.<br />

As a prelude to Summer 2011, where curbside cuisine in London is set to blow up in uniquely London ways, we are kicking things off in a manner that is true to the eat.st ethos. For sixteen days &ndash; from today, 16th May, until Wednesday 1st June &ndash; an eat.st trader each night will hold court in the forecourt of The Rye, on Peckham Rye, SE15 3NX. From concrete comes greatness when animated by our style of mobile food.<br />
<br />
This street food tag team will ensure that food adventurers all over London will be able to get their outdoor chow on like never before. The city is vast. Our traders are flung far and wide. The Rye will (for these days only) make an honest woman of us:<br />

The fee per stall is &pound;120 a day, and includes a trestle table. Lower fees are available if you provide your own marquee, trestle table etc (but these must be in keeping with the colours and branding of the market). <description><![CDATA[Organisers of this year&#39;s <a href=\"http://www.thamesfestival.org/\">Thames Festival</a> (11/12 September) are calling for all traders to come together as much as possible in order to drastically reduce the hefty footprint that normally gets left.<br />
<br />
Imagine hundreds of separate traders - food and otherwise -&nbsp; all turning up for the weekend and each bringing fridge vans, extra prep space, extra wash facilities - and each receiving 2, 3, 4 deliveries from different companies in different vans over such a small space of time and distance.<br />
<br />
And so eat.st have been asked to collectivise our collective. We shall be there for the first time as a complete unit of full-flavour, like-minded, beautifully presented street food slingers - and we&#39;ll be working together to pool our resources and mimimise energy and vehicle movement.<br />
<br />
Other collectives with a presence this year will be the ACA (Airstream Catering Alliance), the Mediterranean Collective and the guys from Whitecross Street Market.<br />
<br />
Lots to do! Come on down and find us - location to be announced.<br />

Salmon names the top ten smaller festivals in the UK, all loved and adored for having retained the soul they began with in the first place.<br />
<br />
We at eat.st have witnessed too many once great festivals lose their charm to commercialism. No one wants to exude all that blood, sweat and tears for no blue-folding stuff at the end of it all, but it&#39;s great to see that some events are unwavering in staying true to the real festival spirit. (And our favourite new discovery, Maverick, is on the list. Yee-HA!)<br />

<description><![CDATA[Having spent the past three weeks in the the land of the Thais, I can firmly state that British street traders have a great deal to learn from our Asian street counterparts. <br />
<br />
Lining every street, throughout every outdoor market and along the platforms of every railway station, freshly cooked street food is being rustled-up 24/7. There are so many traders it makes you wonder how it is possible for them all to make a living. They are all busy enough to be cooking and serving up continuously that we can only conclude that they are.<br />
<br />
In Bangkok, you can get a Phad Thai cooked right in front of you for as little as 30 baht (currently the equivalent of about 60p); if it\\\\\\&#39;s a soup you\\\\\\&#39;re after you could try the ubiquitous rice noodle soup with roasted duck, roasted pork or king prawns for only 40 baht; if you\\\\\\&#39;re after something sweet you might munch your way through a banana and chocolate pancake after parting with only 15 baht and, if all this makes you thirsty, you could wash it all down with the juice from a fresh coconut for an extra 13 baht... and they\\\\\\\\\\\\\\&#39;ll even chop it in half afterwards and provide you with a spoon to eat the flesh with if you ask nicely.<br />
<br />
Thailand has a magnificent street food culture. Eating outdoors is so ingrained in Thai culture that people often prefer to eat amongst the hustle and bustle of the street to eating indoors. And it doesn\\\\\\&#39;t stop at just main meals. If you are just after a fresh fruit hit, for just 30 baht you can treat yourself at one of the many well-stocked smoothie bars. You choose from the display of mouth-watering fruit and vegetables - strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, mango, papaya, apple, carrots, pomegranate to name but a few - and then watch as your choice of fruits is blended right before your eyes. Or you can spend just 10 baht for an expertly-carved fresh pineapple to quench your thirst with goodness straight from the sun. Fresh and healthy is the way of Thai trading and not a processed bun in site. <br />
<br />
If only we had the same culture here in Britain, customers would be spoilt for choice. Thank you Thailand for showing us how it\\\\\\&#39;s done.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Petra and Jimmy; her van have been places. Jimmy started off in Scotland as an ice cream van. An eBay purchase that has not just changed Petra&rsquo;s life but also changed the way that people eat and drink chocolate. She has been in Vogue, the Guardian and many other leading publications as well as appearing on Channel 4 with Willie Harcourt-Cooze talking what she knows; chocolate.<br />
<br />
What you get from her hatch is a choice of many treats. On hot days grab yourself a &#39;rocky road&rsquo; or a &lsquo;mocha ice cream&rsquo; followed by &lsquo;millionaire&#39;s shortbread&rsquo; or a &lsquo;Walnut fudge brownie&rsquo;. On a cold day may I recommend the &lsquo;make it a Jamaican&rsquo; always a good choice on a cold or hot day. <br />
<br />
This will be Petra&rsquo;s 4th year of trading if you haven&rsquo;t seen Petra on her epic journey of tantalising treats that will make you rush from the pure cacao sensation; do so, and be sure to stop for a chocolaty chat.&nbsp;]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[While out on the road touring Britain last year, I found myself in Lancashire and soon felt right at home. It has an atmosphere that seems hazy, like those of half-memories from a long time ago. I went to the Moors, chased a gypsy caravan and propped up bars in seedy hotels in Blackpool. But it was when I got to Morecambe that I fell into the embrace of a truly retro experience.<br />
<br />
There on the promenade, right next to the Midland hotel, was parked Kate in her old Bedford ice cream van, Sunset Ices. Kids ran up to buy Snowball toppers and Oysters and anything which could be dashed up with strawberry sauce.<br />
<br />
I went for an Angostura Ice - a vanilla cone with veins of Angostura bitters channeling through it. It tasted like a Caribbean holiday right there in sunny Morecambe.<br />
<br />
Kate gets all her ice cream from Wallings Farm down the road and has the promenade as her regular pitch when she\\&#39;s not at other events.<br />
<br />
We love her because she loves the 1950s and has made of this love a whole business: operating in the ultimate British seaside town, selling all the old favourites (except with real ice cream, not that stanky chemical soft-serve solution) and even using the van as a mobile art gallery.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Simon nearly rendered himself unconscious with carbon monoxide when he first drove Jesus. he had to pull over in Reading and receive nursing and a stiff drink.<br />

Since then he has given this old banger a beautiful revival. Painted mint green and fringed by a wrap-around bandido head-kerchief - designed by eat.st. favourite, Insa - Luardos is now in heavy duty operation Mon-Fri at Whitecross St Market in East London.<br />
<br />
The brawn behind Luardos has always loved to rap. Now that business is so boom boom boom, rapping has been replaced with wrapping. Hoards of people make the pilgrimage to busy Whitecross St to get in line and await a revelation: freaking tasty, lip-spanking, all well with the world warmth and heat - in the guise of one of Simon\\&#39;s burritos.<br />
<br />
Choose from pulled pork, beef and chorizo, chicken - or any other special that might be on offer. Watch as the expert trio of Simon, Sarah and John show those burritos who\\&#39;s boss and slather then fold them into foiled submission.<br />
<br />
Luardos burritos are one of the only things I ever crave when I wake up with a hangover. They\\&#39;re a soft, hot cylinder of comfort, reassurance and ZING. Very special.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Everyone loves a big old bubbling pan of paella. It is the ultimate theatrical street food and draws curious crowds wanting to soak up a bit of the Valenciana vibes.<br />
<br />
I first came across Jamon Jamon at Standon Calling in 2006. Since then there have been many events that we&#39;ve both been at and the paella that Nick and his team serve is always redolent with great juicy mussels and prawns.<br />
<br />
I love the abundance of their paella servings but so too do I love the abundance of the Jamon Jamon team&#39;s fun and generosity. This lot are a fine example of positivity and pulling together. Of course the food they serve is worthy of praise but I can&#39;t talk about their paella without talking about them as well.<br />
<br />
Hailing from all over the world - with a heavy influence on South Africa - Nick and his crew make doing what we do a real pleasure.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Justin and I got going at almost the same time. It was Secret Garden Party 2006 - back when none of us had to pay the pitch fee until after the event (halcyon days). It felt like a proper party in that intimate, shambolic way that a young, small festival has.<br />
<br />
We ate each others brownies. He said he thought mine rocked - I told him his steak sandwiches were the business, and as for the lightbox La Vache sign glowing meaningfully over the van well, it aroused feelings of warmth and security. (Reassuring in a field full of full-cut loons).<br />
<br />
La Vache is a summer staple which we always seek out at every festival. Everyone works hard at festivals - it\\&#39;s full-on - but Justin really gives it some and lets everyone benefit from it with his proper coffee, fresh out of the oven brownies (much improved since 2006!) and the main event - the La Vache burger. Because of Justin it\\&#39;s no longer appropriate for us to disapprove of burger vans because he re-wrote that greasy old rule book.]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Angus and his Jhal Muri are the real deal]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[I first came across Angus and the Everybody Love Love Express (AKA Street Food Kolkata) in summer 2008 at Kimberley - one of the best festivals I know. It was dark and he was squatting by the swimming pool preparing a muesli mix for the morning in various different bowls.<br />
<br />
That was just breakfast. It was when we came to him, hellish and hungover, for the Jhal Muri that life suddenly started looking up. <br />
<br />
Picture this: a be-capped, red haired man appears in the distance. On his back is strapped the base of his portable stall, on his head is balanced a huge round tray. He strides purposefully but with the gait of someone who&#39;s in no particular hurry.<br />
<br />
At the right spot the base is unstrapped and joined with the tray to make a table from which he preps the Jhal Muri. Lots of stainless steel pots, each containing a key ingredient: coconut, tamarind, puffed rice, coriander, cucumber...and in the middle, bottles of mustard oil and special blends.<br />
<br />
Angus chops and squeezes, mixes and pours - the whole act a sight to see. People stand around transfixed. An actual real person prepping real food and taking time over it - right there in whatever location he happens to choose.<br />
<br />
The Jhal Muri is a treat for the mouth. It&#39;s like a sort of wet Bombay Mix that is spicy, tangy, crunchy and light. Eaten with a fork from a paper cone, you know it&#39;s doing the righty for your body and your lips like it too.<br />
<br />
eat.st. loves Angus and his Everybody Love Love Express because he understands food in a way that is real. His food is rendered from all the time spent in Kolkata, learning the skills on the street and eating, eating, eating.<br />
<br />
It&#39;s not just how good it tastes and how fresh it is but how it is served. Eating is an experience which is heightened by how it is served. We&#39;re not keen on slip, slop, slap at eat.st., we like some banter and a bit of flair. <br />
<br />
Angus dares to flair and we salute him for it.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Joel set up Daddy Donkey in 2005 and has always impressed us with his steely focus and hardcore determination to bring good Mexican food to London&#39;s streets.<br />
<br />
Daddy D have dabbled in festivals and other events but it is on East London&#39;s Leather Lane that they have really got down to it. Starting first as a two-bit peddlar, upping the ante to a good sized trailer and then, in 2007, really making their presence known with a super-burrito mobile that has Leather Lane&#39;s narrow confines bulging at the seams.<br />
<br />
It&#39;s apt because their generous portions will get you feeling the same way. Massive, tasty great stuffed tortilla packages to see you through til dinner - maybe beyond.<br />
<br />
Daddy Donkey are a serious operation who are looking to branch into the bricks and mortar world. We just hope they keep a street presence too - their burritos are needed there!]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[The Meat Wagon is a really exciting street food venture run by someone who has the right idea about the new direction of mobile eating in Britain.<br />
<br />
Yianni goes on regular research trips (gotta love a research trip) to the States and returns to Peckham with great new recipes: chicken wings, sliders, proper french fries and the now famous Bobcat Burger.<br />
<br />
Not so much a market trader as a true itinerant, Yianni and his Meat Wagon pop up in parking lots around and about. Add a bit of music and an interesting mix of people and all of a sudden there&#39;s an underground street food scene going on - great food unencumbered by the strong arm of the law.<br />
<br />
The Meat Wagon represents the best of what eat.st looks for: great food, served with imagination and offered up by people with personality and pioneering spirit.<br />

<description><![CDATA[I&#39;m neighbours with Maddie at every Slow Food Market we do together on the Southbank. I inch a bit forward, she rolls her little rascal back and we eventually figure out the optimum position for both of our vehicles.<br />
<br />
Then she offers me a coffee and I always say no. Not because they\\&#39;re not good, but because I\\&#39;m a right old lightweight and am prone to bouts of banshee-like behaviour after the misguided decision to knock one back.<br />
<br />
But damn do they taste good - and they\\&#39;re obviously strong or else how would half the market remain so perky after working such long hours?<br />
<br />
eat.st. is thrilled to have Maddie and Bean &amp; Gone with us from the start of this roadshow. She works hard, grinds good, smiles a lot and just has a really good temperament for the uncertainty of this business. As I said, her coffee is amazing - real, proper espressos, Flat Whites, macchiatos - whatever you need on the caffeine front - and I just have to limit myself to mini-quaffs here and there.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Nichola and I met at Camp Bestival in the summer of 2009. It was Healthy Yummies&#39; first festival and I was amazed at how professional it all looked. This lot know what they&#39;re doing, I thought. <br />
<br />
Around their stall they had created a bucolic scene of haystacks and bunting. There may even have been a farmyard animal although I can&#39;t verify this for sure. What I do know is that there was always a crowd of people around the stall with the satisfied looks on their faces of having been well fed and happy.<br />
<br />
Healthy Yummies are ones to watch for their attention to detail, focus on food education and for serving dishes that go way beyond the all too often &#39;pedestrian&#39; festival food.<br />
<br />

<description><![CDATA[When we were teenagers Stewed and Baked Giles and myself used to spend a disproportionate amount of time in one particular club in Dalston - dancing like our lives depended on it. Then he went his way, I went mine and didn&#39;t see each other again until last year thanks to the power of Jimmy.<br />
<br />
I got an idea, said an e-mail, can I come and work with you this summer? Up until that point all I knew about Giles&#39; practical skills were pretty, well, raverish, but I welcomed him into the fold...and then stood back inawe as I watched this power house work!<br />
<br />
Hot damn! There was nothing that this cat couldn&#39;t do and he has applied those skills to a speedy setting up and running of Stewed and Baked. He has thrown himself into the market and festival scene this year with a stealthiness that&#39;s impressive.<br />
<br />
But that\\&#39;s not all: the food is home cooking good no matter how far away they are from...home. In a field, chopping up onions, making stocks, braising good Suffolk beef - his stews make you feel like everything\\&#39;s going to be ok. And in Britain, with our weather, that&#39;s what it&#39;s all about.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[eat.st&rsquo;s new home on King&rsquo;s Boulevard, just across the road from the new Central St Martins site and a five minute meander from King&rsquo;s Cross St Pancras station, has managed to cement itself in this new locale in an incredibly short period of time.<br />
<br />
It feels like it has always been there, despite the vast construction site that surrounds it reminding you that the site is brand new. <br />
<br />
Why does it feel like this? <br />
<br />
For the most part it&rsquo;s down to the eat.st food traders themselves: drawing people in with their high quality offerings, creating a fantastically friendly and vibrant atmosphere, and, one could argue, making a very big something out of nothing. <br />
<br />
I spoke to some of the traders on a bright Autumn day about their initial impressions of the site and their thoughts on the future of this exciting new venture. <br />
